As the Garden of England and the
to Gateway to Europe the development of Kent is recorded in many ways,
through documents, letters, diaries, official records, books, illustrations,
photographs and maps.
The Kent County Archives Service collects, cares for and shares this
documentary past from The Centre for Kentish Studies at County Hall,
Maidstone, Canterbury
Cathedral Archives, the East Kent Archives Centre and a number of town
centre libraries.
Which Centre Should I Visit?
As a guide family history sources for mid and south Kent can be found
at the Centre for Kentish Studies and for East Kent at Canterbury Cathedral
Archives. Records for north west Kent are at Medway Archives and Local
Studies Centre. Family history records for those London boroughs that
were
formerly
part of Kent can be found at Bexley and Bromley or London Metropolitan
Archives.
The Centre for Kentish Studies
The headquarters of the Kent County Archives Service, combining archival, printed and educational resources. The Centre houses the records of theCounty Council, as well as census and parish records, wills, borough records, school records, probate records, documents deposited by companies and individuals for the mid and south Kent areas.

There is an extensive collection of books on the history and topography of Kent as well as over 15,000 photographs, postcards, prints and slides, Kentish periodicals, brochures of property sales, and local Acts of Parliament.

East Kent Archives Centre
This centre holds archive material for Dover, Shepway and Thanet District Council areas. Holdings include local authority, school, hospital and estate records.
Parish collections are not held here.
Canterbury Cathedral Archives
CCA is managed in partnership with Canterbury Cathedral and Canterbury City Council. It houses the records of Canterbury Cathedral (including its estates throughout south east England and beyond), Canterbury Diocese (comprising especially Bishops' Transcripts, ecclesiastical court records and tithe maps) and parishes in east Kent. It also holds local government records for Canterbury City and its predecessors and records of other organisations, businesses, administrations and individuals in and around Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay. It also holds census material for south east counties and the IGI. Users of the Archives also have access to the books of Canterbury Cathedral library.
