About the Here's History Kent Web site

The Here's History Kent Web site is a unique and innovative website containing a vast range of local history materials for the towns and parishes of Kent.

The site includes guidance for local historians investigating the history of Kent. Family historians, genealogists and students will find a wealth of information about the county.

Here's History is a collaboration between several departments in the county council and a number of communities in Kent. The project has been coordinated by Ian Coulson and is the culmination of several years work.

The site provides a core of sources and links that make it possible to work on historical evidence at home, in the library or wherever there is a computer linked to the Internet.

The site includes detailed histories of twelve of the oldest towns in the county as well as a host of information about the history of the county and how it can be studied.

The web allows people to use the resources held in the county without having to travel to the archives office. It provides an introduction to historical research and it is hoped that it will stimulate an interest in both the casual and serious study of local history.

Many of the materials for the web site were scanned and compiled by Pauline Davey, Michelle Adams and Tom Sperling. Graham King, of EIS, designed the database driven web site. The project was funded by the New Opportunities Fund and supported by Kent County Council, especially Tricia Phillips, Dr John Williams, Heather Forbes, David Crowther, Judith Davies and Lesley Spenser.
